About MMQG

The Maritime Modern Quilt Guild exists to provide a place where non-traditional, fresh, modern quilters can meet, share, create and basically do quilty stuff! Our group was founded in November, 2013.

We are the Nova Scotia and New Brunswick chapter of The Modern Quilt Guild, based physically out of Halifax, Nova Scotia. We are part of the Modern Quilt Guild movement that encompasses over 100 modern quilt guilds in Canada, the United States, and other countries around the world.
We’d love to have you join us!

What is modern quilting? From the Modern Quilt Guild:

Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. "Modern traditionalism" or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.

Modern quilting has existed in many forms for much of the 20th century. It wasn't until the 2000's that quilts with a modern aesthetic began to appear in greater numbers and quilters began to describe themselves as modern.

What is The Modern Quilt Guild? From the Modern Quilt Guild:
The Modern Quilt Guilds mission is to support and encourage the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community. The MQG developed out of the thriving on line community of modern quilters and their desire to start meeting in person. The founding guild was formed in Los Angeles in October of 2009. Through blogs and the Internet, word spread quickly of the fun they were having and soon guilds started popping up everywhere

Who can join the Maritime Modern Quilt Guild? Anyone with an interest in modern quilting! Beginners are welcome and you will find lots of inspiration in this group! Quilters with more experience and those who consider themselves traditional or art quilters are also warmly welcomed.

I’m a new quilter, am I out of my league? Don’t be intimidated! Our group is friendly and encouraging and we’re excited to see new quilters just getting started. No quilting experience is required to become a member. You can come to a meeting before you’ve even completed your first quilt!

Are there other Modern Quilt Guilds in the Maritimes?
Yes! There is a MQG Chapter in PEI, you can find more information on them here: PEI MQG Blog
